Summary

The problem of understanding phyllotaxis in the shoot meristem is one of many examples in plant development where mechanical forces may play a critical role. In order to simulate, evaluate, and refine hypotheses about the interplay of mechanics and biochemistry in patterning, it is necessary to create more detailed mechanical models than currently exist. There are both software and mathematical obstacles to doing so, and I will suggest directions for progress in removing these obstacles.
