Auxin transport by the numbers: carriers, diffusion, and plasmodesmata

Computer models designed to connect auxin signaling to plant development have had great success in reproducing various patterns of gene activation and tissue growth. However, this success is tempered by a continuing lack of quantitative information about the flux of auxin between cells. I will review three recent research projects that shed light on these auxin fluxes:

(1) the measurement of small-dye movement through plasmodesmata in arabidopsis,

(2) a curated database of measured auxin transport speeds across plant species, and

(3) new results on the influx of auxin into arabidopsis root protoplasts.

The implications for auxin transport and signaling will be discussed.
